Protecting Yourself from Phishing Attacks: A Guide to Email Safety
In an era where technology plays a crucial role in our daily lives, the convenience of email communication comes with its fair share of challenges, particularly when it comes to cybersecurity. Phishing attacks, in which malicious actors attempt to deceive individuals into divulging sensitive information, continue to be a prevalent threat. It's crucial to stay vigilant and informed to avoid falling victim to these scams. Here are some essential tips on how to safeguard yourself against phishing emails.
1. Be Skeptical of Unexpected Emails: Phishers often pose as trustworthy entities to trick you. If you receive an unexpected email, especially from an unfamiliar sender, be cautious. Check for subtle signs of a phishing attempt, such as misspellings, generic greetings, or suspicious email addresses. Always verify the sender's identity before clicking on any links or providing personal information.
2. Verify Email Addresses: Carefully inspect the sender's email address, especially if the email claims to be from a familiar organization. Legitimate companies will use official domains for their communications. Be wary of email addresses with misspellings, extra characters, or domains that seem unusual.
3. Avoid Clicking on Suspicious Links: Hover your mouse over any links in the email without clicking to preview the URL. If the link seems unrelated to the content or redirects to an unfamiliar website, it could be a phishing attempt. Legitimate organizations will not ask you to provide sensitive information through email.
4. Verify Requests for Personal Information: Legitimate entities will rarely ask for sensitive information, such as passwords or credit card details, via email. If an email urges you to provide such information urgently, consider it a red flag. Contact the organization directly using official contact details to verify the request's legitimacy.
5. Look for Secure Connections: Check for "https://" in the URL when entering personal information on a website. Secure websites encrypt data during transmission, making it more difficult for phishers to intercept and misuse your information.
6. Keep Software and Antivirus Programs Updated: Regularly update your operating system, antivirus software, and other applications to patch security vulnerabilities. These updates often include enhanced security features that protect against evolving phishing techniques.
How to get help from Information Technology
1. Email Support: The primary and most efficient way to seek technical help is by sending an email to support@loyno.edu. However, it's important to note that this email must originate from your Loyola email address. This ensures that a service ticket will automatically be generated.
2. Phone Assistance: In case you are grappling with email issues or prefer a more direct approach, you can reach out to the IT department by calling 504-865-2255. You will be asked to leave a message. Upon doing so, a service ticket will be automatically generated, ensuring that your concern is documented and assigned to the appropriate personnel for resolution.
3. In-Person Support: For those who prefer face-to-face assistance or have issues that require immediate attention, the Information Technology department is conveniently located in the Monroe Library, specifically in room 219. You can visit during their regular business hours, which are Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 4:30 pm.
